Theris’ disappearance was particularly concerning because she had reportedly started to hang out with a bad crowd. Earlier in 2017 she had broken up with her boyfriend, Dunston Reed, and moved back in with her parents. Reed told the Daily Mail of his worries. “She was staying out late, mixing with the wrong people,” he said. Then, in June 2017, Theris was arrested for causing a disturbance at a friend’s court hearing. She was released on bail.

The anxiety of Theris’ family was compounded by the fact that she had serious issues with her health. Longstanding eye problems meant that she was registered as legally blind, and she also suffered from bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder, meanwhile, is a condition that causes people to experience severe shifts in mood. Sufferers typically endure both periods of elevated feelings and spells of depression.
