In fact, everyone was watching a whale, which had been sighted in the area over the previous few days. This time, however, it was swimming close to the boats, before settling on Iskenderian’s vessel. The whale then came within a matter of inches of the boat.
Iskenderian subsequently described the moment to The Sydney Morning Herald. “He was just hanging around, bringing his eye out of the water and looking directly at us,” Iskenderian recalled. Indeed, the creature was so close that the fishermen could hear it breathing.
Iskenderian said that the sound was “immensely loud.” The whale’s behavior was unusual, and it looked as though it wanted something, repeatedly raising its head out of the water. Consequently, the fisherman realized what was going on: the whale needed their help.
